	The asterisk outlook dialer was born out of a need for a secure way to dial from MSOutlook via an asterisk server. Solutions we examined in the market were either not secure due to the fact that the Asterisk Manager password needed to be keyed into the Outlook component or were too bulky for what we were trying to do. On large installations, exposing the Asterisk Manager password was a *big* security risk (in our opionion at least) as well as an extra step needed for the administrator. We decided to implement our own MSOutlook dialer which would overcome the issue of both security and size of the component. The Asterisk Outlook Dialer is implemented as a php script that runs on the asterisk server (apache). This php script acts as a "proxy" between the Asterisk server and the Oulook component. It uses the Asterisk Manager to log on and execute commands on the Asterisk box. The Outlook Dialer calls this script with the parameters such as the extension to be dialed, the number to be dialed, the callerID etc. It comes with a small installer (400K) which installs the outlook component. The php script needs to be dumped into your www folder. The main advantage of this approach is the php acts as a proxy to the Asterisk server and therefore very little configuration is necessary on the client (Outlook) end. 	ProfileLink is an application designed to help laptop users easily use their computer at different locations. When using a laptop computer at different locations, e.g. office, home and travelling may require the user to make different kinds of selections when launching applications. When the user logs on to the computer ProfileLink will start automatically and launch the applications that the user has assigned to the current hardware profile. ProfileLink will also set up the users default printer depending on hardware profile. If the user changes the default printer ProfileLink will register this and use this setting the next time the user logs on using the same hardware profile. As an example we can take a look at how to use a mail client. E.g. when using the computer in the office the user will normally use the company’s mail server, but when using the computer at home or while travelling the user might use the mail server of some ISP. Prior to ProfileLink there ware several ways to accomplish this, but none of them ware fully automatic. One way to do it could be to let the user select the profile when the mail client was launched, another could be to create a number of batch files that the user could invoke depending on his or her current location. The last method we will mention here is one that seems to be widely used and it relies on creating multiple user-accounts for the same user and letting the user select the account matching the location, e.g. Lisa would have three accounts, Lisa (Office), Lisa (Home) and Lisa (Travelling). The problem with this solution is that if Lisa installs a new program in the office account it will not be available in the two other accounts. With ProfileLink it is possible to configure which parameters a specific application should be launched with depending on the current location. 	Google Desktop is a free tool available for download from the Google web site. This powerful instrument is intended as a cross-platform solution that allows you to make searches on your local PC the same way as you search the WEB with Google. But what is good in general cannot be absolutely perfect for every particular case. Halftone Search from Trietech is a free Google Desktop add-on that offers some advanced Google Desktop functionality to MS Windows users. Google Desktop uses an HTML interface. It's fine for the net, but on your local desktop you would certainly prefer an application that uses native Windows controls. Halftone Search solves this problem by offering you an alternative Google Toolbar UI. With the Halftone Search, you can highlight search terms in the results, customize fonts, etc. The program can extract compressed files on-the-fly and show their contents.
