Ping is one of the most useful network debugging tools available. The first ping program was written by Mike Muuss in December 1983 for use on Unix machines. Muuss named his program after the sonar sounds used for echolocation by submarines, although some say ping stands for "Packet InterNet Grouper". Ping sends a small packet of information containing an ICMP ECHO_REQUEST to a specified computer, which then sends an ECHO_REPLY packet in return. The ping program then evaluates this reply, and a report is shown. You can check several things with the ping program: can you reach another computer, how long does it take to bounce a packet off of another site (what is the distance), ... You can ping either a domain name, or an IP address. Functionality to show domain names when using IP addresses is supported. Even routing options are available, alas only 9 routes can be shown due to the structure of the IP header (RFC 792). Why did I write my own ping program? There are two main reasons: a) It wanted to know how the ping program worked. I found it really intriguing and was very curious and b) There was a need for a better ping program here at the lab where I work.

If you have a domain name, you can use one of the numerous Whois tools to determine its owner. Whois provides complete information about the owner of any domain name, up to the level of mailing addresses and telephone numbers. But what if you donâ€™t have a domain name? What if all you have is a mere IP address? Or what if you donâ€™t need information about the domain name, but are much more interested in who owns the Web server where itâ€™s hosted? Quite often it is still possible to determine the owner, or, rather, the assignee, of an IP address. IP addresses in North America are assigned by ARIN, an independent, nonprofit corporation that provides IP registration. It is possible to unveil details about the organization that uses a particular IP address, or, to be precise, a block of IP addresses. There are no tools that come with Windows which can look up information about an IP address. Instead, you can visit ARIN database, learn about its query syntax, and fire up search on an IP address. If the address does not belong to the North American block, you will quite often see only the basic information specifying the country and organization responsible for assigning IP addresses there. To discover owner information of your original IP address, you then will have to visit a whois server of that organization and repeat the whole process. While thereâ€™s nothing wrong in doing all these queries, it takes an awful lot of time. We at Soft Institute wrapped the same thing into a small and package. SI Lookup queries the right server right automatically, and returns clearly legible, well formatted output. For the business user, VNC can be used to provide a flexible hot-desking and road-warrior environment by allowing employees to access their office desktop and server machines from any machine in the company's offices or from other remote sites, regardless of the type of computers involved at either end. ADRC Data Recovery Tools v1.0 contains a collection of DIY data recovery tools that supports a wide variety of drives (fixed drives or removable drives) and file systems (FAT12, FAT16, FAT32 and NTFS) for Windows 95/ 98, Windows ME, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP and Windows 2003 server. The software incorporates extremely simple GUI with novice users in mind. The software zooms in to do only critical data recovery or backup functions with minimum complexity. It gives you full control to undelete files. You can even undelete the files even after you have cleared the recycle bin. The software also supports disk to disk mage back up or disk cloning, export or import a backup disk image so you could back up and restore the system image and data at one go (in case you do not want to reinstall the operating system and application program). This function is especially useful if you need to clone disk with unknown file systems such as MAC or UNIX. It also allow you to copy files from hard disk or removable data media with bad sectors where normal windows copy will result in system hang. When bad sectors are found on the disk, the program will intelligently search the neighbouring sectors to determine the extent of bad blocks and mathematically calculate the number of retries needed to optimize the speed of copying. You can even edit, repair or restore your corrupted boot parameters (either FAT or NTFS boot sector type). The program is designed to be compact "green-ware" without any installation. In fact, the whole program is less than 100 kb and you could stuff it anywhere (such as a floppy) and run the program from there to do the necessary recovery or backup.
