Pivo.Ping allows you to effortless enable your applications to send Internet Control Message Protocol (Ping/ICMP) packets in .NET. Programmatically ping a remote server, host, route, or any network device to see if it is up. Pivo.Ping fully supports RFC 792 standard.
Pivo.Ping is a server component. It requires the Microsoft .NET runtime in order to function properly. Pivo.Ping is used to programmatically ping hosts on a network.
A 'Ping' is a technique for sending an ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) packet(s) to a remote host. If the remote host is up, and supports ICMP, a control message, or packet, will be sent back to the sender. This technique provides a mechanism for feedback about communication problems in a networked environment. Pivo.Ping abstracts this mechanism in an easy to use manner for the programmer. For more information about ICMP, check out the RFC 792 at http://www.faqs.org/rfcs/rfc792.html.
Pivo.Ping can only be used programmatically from a .NET environment, including, but not limited to, ASP.NET, winforms, console applications, and web services. Here are two brief examples for using Pivo.Ping from C# and Visual Basic. The following example pings www.pivo.com. Pivo.Ping is a low overhead, highly optimized assembly that needs the Microsoft .NET (or equivalent) framework to run. Pivo.Ping can be used from any environment supported by .NET, which can include winforms, ASP.NET, console applications, components, or web services.

This application was written due to a lot of frustration from my side, I have been working a lot with network configurations, routers setup (networking maintenance, in general). I didn’t have any good tool that will help me with the little things. I hate going to command prompt and run programs like, ping, tracert, net stat, etc.
While administrating couple of small networks, I found out that it will be much more easier to keep all of the clients well updated by enabling the option of controlling them remotely. Of course there are a lot of software out there that can remotely control a client but I wanted the process to be transparent to the client side. I wanted something that will give me the ability of installing software on the remote side without kicking the user out from its own machine (for example, installing an update of virus definitions). Installing client side software was out of the question, I don't like to walk to each and every computer on the network and installing a "listening" software manually.
The Network Commander is able to connect to any client on the network, executing processes, ending processes, running DOS commands and more just at a click of a button from the server side.
Couple of more convenient features where implemented to make your life much more easier: port scanner, that can scan a range of IP address for open/closed ports, network utilization that can enumerate the current network usage, TCP/UDP/ICMP/IP statistics for the current machine and more..

Ping is one of the most useful network debugging tools available. The first ping
program was written by Mike Muuss in December 1983 for use on Unix machines. Muuss
named his program after the sonar sounds used for echolocation by submarines,
although some say ping stands for "Packet InterNet Grouper". Ping sends a small
packet of information containing an ICMP ECHO_REQUEST to a specified computer,
which then sends an ECHO_REPLY packet in return. The ping program then evaluates
this reply, and a report is shown. You can check several things with the ping
program: can you reach another computer, how long does it take to bounce a packet
off of another site (what is the distance), ... You can ping either a domain name,
or an IP address. Functionality to show domain names when using IP addresses is
supported. Even routing options are available, alas only 9 routes can be shown due
to the structure of the IP header (RFC 792). Why did I write my own ping program?
There are two main reasons: a) It wanted to know how the ping program worked. I
found it really intriguing and was very curious and b) There was a need for a
better ping program here at the lab where I work.
