exe-eBook Creator License: Freeware
exe-eBook creator is a freeware ebook compiler for TreePad files. It enables you to create a stand-alone eBook from a TreePad file with just a few mouse clicks. This stand-alone eBook is a single "exe-file" containing the TreePad database as well as the TreePad Viewer program. The advantage of an exe-eBook is that it can be distributed royalty-free as a single file, since both data and viewer program are contained inside the program. Furthermore, a TreePad exe-eBook runs directly without installing anything! exe-eBook creator can also compile password protected and encrypted TreePad files as exe-eBook. Additionally: exe-eBooks contain a search engine, an options screen, zoom function 10% - 1000%, history back/forward, etc. An exe-eBook can contain plain text articles, formatted articles, images, tree node icons, hyperlinks.

Janino License: Freeware
Janino is a compiler that reads a Java expression, block, or source file, and generates Java bytecode that is loaded and executed directly. It is not intended to be a development tool, but an embedded compiler for run-time compilation purposes, such as expression evaluators or "server pages" engines like JSP. Properties The major design goal was to keep the compiler small and simple, while partially sacrificing completeness. I don't like the idea of carrying around huge libraries for simple applications. See Parser for the list of implemented and missing language features. When do you need an efficient expression evaluator? Say you build an e-commerce system, which computes the shipping cost for the items that the user put into his/her shopping cart. Because you don't know the merchant's shipping cost model at implementation time, you could implement a set of shipping cost models that come to mind (flat charge, by weight, by number of items, ...) and select one of those at run-time. In practice, you will most certainly find that the shipping cost models you implemented will rarely match what the merchant wants, so you must add custom models, which are merchant-specific. If the merchant's model changes later, you must change your code, re-compile and re-distribute your software. Because this is so unflexible, the shipping cost expression should be specified at run-time, not at compile-time. This implies that the expression must be scanned, parsed and evaluated at run-time, which is why you need an expression evaluator. A simple expression evaluator would parse an expression and create a "syntax tree". The expression "a + b * c", for example, would compile into a "Sum" object who's first operand is parameter "a" and who's second operand is a "Product" object who's operands are parameters "b" and "c". Such a syntax tree can evaluated relatively quickly. However, the run-time performance is about a factor of 100 worse than that of native Java code.

CodeClip License: Freeware

Imagine commenting your code or script just by...talking! Communicate with students, code maintainers, future programmers, and fellow scriptwriters in your own voice and language, using The Code Closet's revolutionary CodeClip. You can also attach Web links, pictures, diagrams, bug reports, non_English documents, and executable files at the very line in your script or code referencing them! The software is targeted at programmers, Web page authors, teachers, network administrators, and anyone who writes scripts that control computer application behaviors. It is extremely useful to teachers, authors of technical books and/or tutorials, code librarians, and anyone whose native language is not English. One of our beta-testers told us her son had discovered a totally non-technical and unexpected use - as a speech writer! For technical users, the source code or script file that they produce is written in plain (also called ASCII) text. It is usually written with some kind of plain text editor, often specially designed for that kind of programming or script - Web designers might use an HTML editor, for example, and a programmer might use the Visual Basic or Visual C++ development tools. The output files that are produced for these purposes must remain as plain text so that the compiler or interpreter that tells the computer what to do can understand (or 'parse') the contents of those input files easily. Because the scripts or source code are often difficult to read and understand by anyone other than the original author, most good programmers and script writers put comments and notes into their code. That makes it possible for someone else to add to or fix the original code, or even for the original author to remember what he or she was doing years later after they've long forgotten. This step, often overlooked by inexperienced coders and script writers, is critically important to professionals - the value of software is only as good as your ability to maintain it.
